“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” John 3:6-8 KJV
I have always found the story of the interaction between Christ and Nicodemus in John chapter three fascinating. Here was a leader in the synagogue, who had no clue about spiritual things. The intriguing thing was that he could recognise the spiritual when he saw Christ. However, he valued his status in the community so much so, that he needed the cloak of darkness before coming to Christ (John 3:2). There is a lesson here, but that is not the subject of this article.
Nicodemus needed an answer to his curiosity but there was something unique and extraordinary about Christ. He just could not figure Him out and despite all outward appearances there was something about Christ he did not understand. In other words, Christ was an Enigma.
The answer he got was probably more confusing. It was simple but absolute; ”You must be born again”. In other words, he needed a second birth. The first is by water, that is common to all but the second is by and of the Spirit. This is the game changer that makes us a marvel and a wonder. John 3 Verse 6, ’flesh can only do physical things, you need the spirit for the spiritual’ (my paraphrase).
The born again, the New Creation is designed by God to be an Enigma. Christ said we are like the wind, think about that (John 3:8). We see the effects of the wind but not the wind itself. The wind is intangible but leaves tangible effects, the wind is an Enigma, just like the born again. The world has difficulty with what it cannot understand. But don’t worry, you are not the one with the problem.
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16 KJV
The sacred scriptures describe Christ as ’the lion of the tribe of Judah, and the lamb of God that takes away the Sin of the world’ (Revelation5:5, John 1:29). To the uninitiated, this is an apparent contradiction but not so with you. Why? Because we are also Enigmas, we are New Creations, born again, we are StrongNation. We are in the midst of wolves, but don’t ever forget that you are an Enigma, wise as serpents, yet harmless as doves.
