“He teacheth my hands to war so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” Psalms 18:34 KJV
As I mature in this walk with the Lord, I have come to realise that success and failure are both products of habits. I know it sounds strange, but believe me it’s true. We live in a fallen world so the default is that things have a way of precipitating towards the lowest denomination. We need to learn and train for success.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
There are many scriptures that encourage hard work, but I have an affinity for 2 Timothy 2:15 (it is an inscription on a plaque in my secondary school library). It is an admonition that speaks to this topic; take time to consider it. David said ”God teaches my hand to war, so much so, that I can now break a bow made of steel”, picture that! There is nothing subtle about it.
“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” Proverbs 22:29 KJV
If you are going to train for winning, it requires hard work. That is a touch of inspiration but a truckload of hard work and consistency. Talent and gifts can only take you so far. Even diamond in the rough requires polishing. There is a difference between hard work and toiling. The absence of God in your efforts is toiling. To be sure God actually appreciates hard work (as long as you are not dependent on it) read 1 Corinthians 15:10. I challenge you to go through the Bible and you will not find God commissioning any lazy person from Noah to Paul. Laziness disqualifies, even Adam was not on a tourist visa in the garden of Eden. God asked him to dress and keep it, that is labour intensive.
“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” Matthew 12:35 KJV
Once you have trained and formed the winning habit, you can almost always reproduce it. It sounds strange but it is true. Your success comes from within. A modern translation of Matthew 12:35 says in part,” Success is flung from the inside to the outside…” Shocking? Haven’t you noticed that it appears that some people just ’cannot stop winning’.
” If you refuse to lose when you have little to lose, you will win when you have all to lose” – Femi Idowu
The truth is that we can all train to win and we can all form the habit of success. David just didn’t defeat Goliath at the Valley Elah, he did way before then at the back side of the desert. When he stopped the bear and lion from mauling the few sheep (1 Samuel 17:34-37). He was training to win. He was developing the habit for success. Don’t just do it because it’s convenient or there is an audience, do it because you are Training for Winning.
