Whose Church Is It Anyway?

The concept of church needs to be revisited as it appears that we have lost its meaning. This misunderstanding applies to both the orthodox and Pentecostal congregations. The orthodox sees the building as the Church and the Pentecostal have introduced the notion of PLC, with the branch pastors claiming ownership. Both approaches are wrong.

To prove these Cathedrals that were once places of Christian worship are empty or worse still used to serve other gods. For those who claim ownership, we have seen greed, in fighting and paranoia exhibited because of insecurity. We need to revisit the original intention of Christ when he said, ‘….. upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it’ (Matthew 16:18b). Clearly, Christ owns the Church and unless we acknowledge this we cannot claim victory over the gates of hell. Because of these carnal humanistic approaches some now shy away from being associated with the word Church. We must not allow that otherwise we would be conceding defeat by default. We need to take a stand and change this wrong perception through knowledge and freedom of the Spirit. .

The Church is the body of Christ (ekklasia), 1Peter 2:9 paints an accurate picture of who we are. Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers are supposed to minister to the Church, to bring her to where she ought to be, not to claim ownership (Ephesians 4:11-13). If only we can follow the scriptures and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Church will attract the world, after all we are the once with the answers to their problems. We are the custodians of the mysteries that hold the whole universe in place and we are the ones with a glorious future.

The Church has a dual role, Priests and Kings. As priest we minister to God, approach the throne room without fear or trepidations. As Kings we establish the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. We can only do that if we heed the Master’s admonition and let Him build a strong Church, not the building or PLC by stealth.

As with all things with God, it is simple if we allow Him do it through us and not impose our own ideas and gimmickry. It’s time to awake…….
